Ainhoa

Ainhoa

Ainhoa is classified among the most beautiful villages of France. This fortified village built in the early 13th century, with half-timbered houses against a backcloth of green hills, was an important stop on the pilgrim path to Santiago de Compostela.

There is a hiking trail crossing the four villages of the area. The path, signed by small blue horses drawn on rocks, is named “pottokaren bidea” (the way of the horse), located between grassland and forests.

Urdax

Continuous erosion of the river Urtxuma created this cave some 14,000 years ago. A guided tour through its galleries will open up a hidden world of stalagmites and stalactites.

Urdax

It is believed that a small congregation of Augustinian Canons established a pilgrims hospital here in the 11th century. In the 12th and 13th centuries the hospital was occupied by the Order of Canons Regular of Prémontré, also known as the Premonstratens

Zugarramurdi

In addition to the tragic events of the Inquisition that gave Zugarramurdi the epithet 'the town of the witches', the Museum paints a portrait of 17th-century Basque society and its magical universe of myths, medicinal plants and ancestral rituals.

Zugarramurdi

According to legend, this impressive karst tunnel, located less than 500 metres from the town centre, was the site of akelarres, the ritual festivals seen as devil worship by the Inquisition.

Sare

It is the highest mountain in the area, where you can get to the top by an authentic vintage rack railway train. The climb is very bucolic. When it is sunny, the landscape from the top is spectacular : all the coast from the Landes until Biscaya and also
